Water-Intake Reference Planner
See the adult adequate-intake water reference, split into food and beverage portions.
What this answers:
- What is the population reference for total water (food + beverages), and what might the beverage-only portion look like?
These are population references, not precise individual requirements — actual needs vary with climate, activity, and health status. The 20% food-water share is an editable illustrative assumption, not a measurement. This tool does not provide a target for anyone on a fluid restriction (e.g. for kidney or heart failure) — follow your clinician's guidance instead.

How it's calculated
illustrative beverage water = total reference × (1 − food-water fraction)
Worked example
Male reference 3.7 L, 20% from food: 3.7 × 0.80 = 2.96 L/day from beverages.
