What this answers:
- Of the patients active at the start of a period, what percentage were still active (not counting new patients) at the end?
- How many of my originally-active patients did I retain?
Define "active" and the period consistently before entering numbers — the new-patient count must refer only to patients who are part of the ending population, not every new registration during the period.

How it's calculated
retained = end active − new patients in end population retention % = retained / start active × 100
Worked example
1,000 active at start, 950 active at end, 150 of those are new: 950 − 150 = 800 retained ÷ 1,000 = 80% retention.
